I say this to the President, and his defenders in Congress:

You may think it’s okay how Trump and his associates interacted with Russians during the campaign.

I don’t.

Donald Trump must be convicted and removed from office.

Because he will always choose his own personal interest over our national interest.

Because in America, right matters. Truth matters.

If not, no Constitution can protect us.

After listening to the President’s lawyers opening arguments, I have three observations:

They don’t contest the facts of Trump’s scheme.

They’re trying to deflect, distract from, and distort the truth.

And they are continuing to cover it up by blocking documents and witnesses.

Last year, we proved Donald Trump guilty of abusing the power of his office.

But Republican Senators refused to convict, claiming on principle, voters should decide.

Now, those same Senators wish to overturn the election results.

They have no principle, only fear and ambition.

Here’s my record — and I’m damn proud of it:

Lifetime NRA rating: F

Donations from NRA: $0

We can fortify the defenses of the Capitol. 

We can reinforce doors and put up fences.

But we cannot guard our democracy against those who walk the halls of the Capitol, have taken an oath to uphold our Constitution, but refuse to do so.

It will be said of House Republicans,

When they found they lacked the courage to confront the most dangerous and unethical president in American history,

They consoled themselves by attacking those who did.

For those who were convicted of lying to cover up his crimes, Trump urges lighter sentences and dangles pardons.

He demands his enemies be investigated and prosecuted.

He retaliates against witnesses and public servants.

Republicans’ response?

Silence.

The Postmaster General must resign.

He’s slowed delivery, banned overtime & decommissioned mail-sorting machines.

Right before the election. During a pandemic.

The House must demand answers. Hearings should start now. It can’t wait.

We won’t let Trump destroy the Post Office.

This week, Republicans objected to giving workers $1,200 checks to pay rent and feed their families.

Why? 

“The deficit.”

They didn’t care about the deficit when they passed $2 trillion in tax cuts for big corporations and millionaires.

The biggest deficit is in their values.

President Nixon asked the Department of Justice if he could pardon himself. They said no, as no one may be the judge in their own case. He resigned three days later.

I would say that I completely believe President Trump misspoke and that he has full faith and confidence in the members of our intelligence community and understands that Putin and Russia were fully responsible for intervening in our election.

Sorry. I meant wouldn’t.

President Trump is exacting his retribution, removing those who complied with subpoenas, came forward, and testified about his misconduct.

These are the actions of a man who believes he is above the law —

Precisely the kind of conduct Congressional Republicans enabled.

I don’t care how the draft leaked. That’s a sideshow.

What I care about is that a small number of conservative justices, who lied about their plans to the Senate, intend to deprive millions of women of reproductive care.

Codifying Roe isn't enough. We must expand the court.

Bolton’s staff were asked to testify before the House to Trump’s abuses, and did. They had a lot to lose and showed real courage.

When Bolton was asked, he refused, and said he’d sue if subpoenaed. Instead, he saved it for a book.

Bolton may be an author, but he’s no patriot.

The transcript of the call reads like a classic mob shakedown:

– We do a lot for Ukraine
– There’s not much reciprocity
– I have a favor to ask
– Investigate my opponent
– My people will be in touch

Nice country you got there.

It would be a shame if something happened to her.

History will not be kind to Donald Trump.

Because truth matters. Right matters. And decency matters.

It may be midnight in Washington, but the sun will rise again.

Thank you, Dr. Ford, for your courage. Your testimony did not change the outcome — these GOP Senators were not interested in the truth — but it did change the country. You have inspired millions of Americans, women and men.

We will not forget your bravery.

Or their cowardice.

Trump just tweeted:

“I stand stronger than anyone in protecting your Healthcare with Pre- Existing Conditions.”

How absurd.

His Administration is in court—right now—trying to repeal the entire ACA, including protections for pre-existing conditions.

No one is fooled.

Trump is declaring a national emergency to bypass Congress, to build a wall we don’t need, to address a crisis that doesn’t exist, by claiming an authority he doesn’t have.

If that sounds like nonsense, it’s because it is. It’s also plainly unconstitutional.

The House proved overwhelmingly that the President abused his power.

Now the verdict is in:

One Republican Senator had the courage to do impartial justice.

To put country over party.

And vindicate the Founders’ faith in self-governance.

And show us,

Right still matters.

All over the world, those living under oppressive regimes look to us.

They look to us because we have a rule of law. Because in America, no one is above that law.

To my Senate colleagues, I implore you:

Give America a fair trial.
